    Details

From the 12th century the Resurrection of Christ begins to appear regularly Western art , with Christ shown emerging from what is normally shown as a Roman-style sarcophagus placed on the ground. Here he is placed on a small rocky piece of ground with his left foot on top of a small skull symbolising Golgotha or Calvary. Although both hands are missing on this carving, he would have had is right hand raised in blessing whilst his left would have carried a banner with the Triumphal cross (red cross on a white background) derived from a vision from the 4th century Roman Emperor Constantine.
