Lions of Venice

The Venetians ‘retrieved’ the body of St Mark from Alexandria in January 828 AD, placing his body in what would become the basilica and henceforward the city and Republic would become inextricably linked with the symbol of the Saint – the lion. As you travel around the city the Venetian lions are everywhere.
