Constitution day is celebrated on 6th December in Spain and marks the approval of the Spanish Constitution in 1978. After the death of Franco in 1975 an election took place to convene Parliament (Cortes) to draft and approve a constitution. This was approved by the Cortes in October 78 and by the Spanish people in a referendum on 6th December. Today is therefore a celebration of Spain becoming a democracy and has since been a National holiday.
