    Details

Guillaume Apollinaire was a French poet and playwright considered to be one of the most influential poets of the early 20th century. He was a passionate supporter of Cubism (he is credited to have coined the term) and its successor surrealism. As such, he had a strong influence over painters such as Picasso, Braque and Léger and the surrealism of Salvador Dali.
The cubist composition in the poster exemplifies the principles of Analytical Cubism and presents the viewer with a fragmented reality, reassembled through geometric forms and the interplay of light and shadow. The original is in The National Gallery, Prague.
