A great piece of Spanish folk art ; a richly patinated Basque sailors trunk with a painted interior of a central compass rose flanked by two roundel motifs. The outside of the trunk has a further whorl motif below an iron diamond escutcheon.
This stunning sailor's trunk is made from stained pine with painted decoration and originates from the Basque region of Spain. The Basques are a European ethnic group, characterised by their Basque language, a common culture and shared genetic ancestry to the ancient Vascones and Aquitanians. Basques primarily inhabit an area traditionally known as the Basque Country , a region that is located around the western end of the Pyrenees on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and straddles parts of north-central Spain and south-western France
