A stunning pair of Catalan garnet earrings in high carat yellow gold with articulated bodies. Dating to the late 18th century circa 1780, they have fabulous engraved detail to the gold work of the bodies.
Garnets are historically one of the most important of the coloured gemstones, valued for their hardness and excellent brilliance. The word garnet comes from the 14th‑century Middle English word gernet, meaning 'dark red' and actually refers to a family of different gemstones. There are many different varieties and the stones here would appear to be Hessonite garnet that is often called cinnamon stone for its brownish-red colour.
Condition: Later screw fittings, minor abrasions.
