Juan Gris was born in Madrid but spent nearly all of his active career in Paris and became heavily influential in both Analytical and Synthetic Cubism. Nature Morte au livre, which was painted in 1913, is a good example of Juan Gris' dedication to this avant-garde movement. It is also called ‘Hommage to Max Jacob’ who was a leader of the movement and a close friend of the artist. One can clearly see his name in the painting itself. The original painting was bequeathed to National Museum of Modern Art in Paris by Louise and Michel Leiris.
