Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor famed for his portraits and nudes in a fresh modern style. His paintings are characterised by asymmetrical compositions, the elongation of the faces, necks, and bodies and a simple but monumental use of line. He moved from Italy to Paris in 1906 where he was heavily influenced by Pablo Picasso and the post-impressionism of Paul Cézanne. ‘Nude Sitting on a Divan’ was one of a series of nudes painted by Modigliani in 1917 that caused a sensation when exhibited in Paris that year. It became "notorious" in modern art history for its sensational public reception and the attendant issues of obscenity. On November 2, 2010, the painting sold at a New York auction for $68.9 million, a record price for an artwork by Modigliani.
