A large and fabulous brass Moorish candlestick possibly originating from Andalusia. It has a long detachable knopped stem above a broad multifaceted base engraved with Islamic script.
The Moors, who derived largely from Arabia and North Africa, ruled huge swathes of Southern Spain for seven centuries, from 711 until their expulsion in 1492 and had a wide impact on Spanish culture. The Muslim rule of Medieval Iberia (modern-day Spain) has heavily influenced Spain's language, food, intellectual culture, art and architecture.
