The drawing shows the apotheosis or divination of the nymph, Galatea, riding a sea-shell chariot drawn by two dolphins surrounded by a triton abducting a nymph and further sea creatures.
Stefano Pozzi was an Italian painter and draughtsman who was highly active in Rome in the early 18th century. At one point in his career Pozzi held the position of official painter of the Vatican, and also that of ‘Custode delle Pitture’, responsible for maintaining and restoring works in the Vatican collections, including the frescoes of Raphael, which means Pozzi was certainly closely familiar with the great master’s work.

Ref: A further drawing of the Triumph of Galatea by Pozzi is in the art collection of the State of Maryland (acc. no. MSA SC 4680-13-0408)
