A fabulous early 16th century polychrome and gilt-wood figure of St John the Evangelist from a crucifixion group dating to around 1500. He looks upwards, with tears streaming down his face, holding aloft part of Christ’s white perizoneum. The apostle also holds a book under his right arm, one of his associated symbols.

John the Evangelist was one of Christ’s twelve apostles and is also known as John the Apostle , John of Patmos and the Beloved Disciple. As the youngest of the disciples the Church states that he outlived the remaining apostles and was the only one to die of natural causes. Tradition has held that he is the author of The Gospel of John and four other books in the New Testament, three epistles and the Book of Revelation. John was alone among the Apostles to remain near Jesus at the foot of the cross on Calvary alongside several women and, following the instruction of Christ from the Cross, he took Mary into his care as the last bequest of Jesus. This carving depicts that scene in moving detail.
