Mortars have historically been used for the preparation of medicines or foods through the process of grinding with a pestle. The English word mortar is thought to derive from classical Latin mortarium, meaning "receptacle for pounding" or "product of grinding or pounding". The classical Latin pistillum, meaning "pounder", led to English pestle.
