A lovely carved fruitwood figure of the standing Madonna dating to the late 17th Century. This is a continental piece most probably South Netherlands and would have come from a figural group of the Crucifixion or, more likely, the Lamentation of Christ.Details
The Lamentation of Christ is a common subject in Christian art from the High Middle Ages to the Baroque. After Jesus was crucified, his body was then removed from the cross and his friends mourned over his body . Accounts in the Gospels concentrate on the roles of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, but they also mention Mary and Mary Magdalene as being present. The event has been depicted by many different artists but famous interpretations were done by Giotto, Mantegna and Bellini , and Albrecht Dürer.
