Today is Good Friday and it provides an excellent excuse to show one of our fabulous polychrome carvings of St John . (HA0057) .  John the Evangelist was one of Christ’s twelve apostles and is also known as John the Apostle , John of Patmos and the Beloved Disciple. As the youngest of the disciples the Church states that he outlived the remaining apostles and was the only one to die of natural causes. John was alone among the Apostles to remain near Jesus at the foot of the cross on Calvary alongside several women and, following the instruction of Christ from the Cross, he took Mary into his care as the last bequest of Jesus – “Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother”. This carving depicts that scene in moving detail. The Sayings of Jesus on the cross (sometimes called the Seven Last Words from the Cross) are seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. Traditionally, the brief sayings have been called “words”.
