A fabulous walnut Friar's chair or throne chair with original polychrome embossed seat and back. The crest rail features the heraldic castle of Castile flanked by a pair of wings and carved mask finials to the uprights whilst the leather back panel has the Pillars of Hercules and two Cherubs.Details
This type of chair with leather backpanel, leather seat and armrests is commonly called a Friars chair as they were often thought to be used in monasteries or other religious houses. However they were also seen outside of these orders in the homes of wealthy patrons and in the military ranks . This is a highly decorative piece which would look good in a hall or landing or set beside a log fire .
